    PRESQUE ISLE — With its summer enrollment numbers nearly doubling since last year, the University of Maine at Presque Isle has the highest percentage increase within the University of Maine System of students taking summer courses. Officials are attributing the increase in large part to summer online course offerings and efforts to respond to students’ needs.

    AUGUSTA — Gov. John E. Baldacci recently celebrated Maine’s women veterans at a ceremony to unveil the new Maine Women Veterans Memorial Plaque. The plaque was designed as a result of a resolve passed by the 124tth Maine Legislature to create a permanent memorial to women veterans in the State House. The governor joined women veterans and supporters at a Statehouse reception to unveil the design and to begin the fund-raising effort to cover the $24,000 cost of the plaque.

ImageIN WASHINGTON — By Invitation, Tribal Chief Brenda Commander and Jane Root, Director of Maliseet Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Program attended the ceremony at the White House where President Obama signed into law H.R. 725 – the Tribal Law and Order Act of 2010. This law entering into force marked an important step forward in beginning to address some of the many continuing injustices that Native American and Alaska Native communities – particularly Native women – face in this country.
