Elm Tree Diner opens rebuilt restaurant with style

HOULTON — It has been almost a year since a fire destroyed the Elm Tree Diner in the early morning of Sept. 28, 2009. For a time, it appeared as if the iconic eatery had served its final meal.
But Gary L. Dwyer was not about to let his restaurant vision go up in flames quite so easily. Construction on a new Elm Tree Diner began before the end of 2009 and is now complete.

Giggles & Stickers, new licensed daycare in Patten

PATTEN — Occasional babysitting for a friend eventually turned into a new career for Jill Shorey, the owner of Giggles and Stickers, a recently licensed daycare agency in Patten.
After losing her restaurant job in Island Falls to a fire there, Shorey started taking care of a friend’s one-year-old boy a few days a week. “It turned into five days a week, forty hours a week and it just went from there,” said Shorey.

For the third year in a row, Machias Savings Bank was named to the prestigious Best Places to Work in Maine list along with 40 other businesses in its category. The Best Places to Work in Maine Program was established in 2006 to recognize employee-focused businesses in Maine. One crucial step in the application process is a questionnaire employees complete regarding their employer; the second step is a benefits questionnaire completed by the employer.

Kathryn Callnan received the 2010 Excellence in Leadership Award from Aging Services of Maine and New Hampshire at their annual conference in May. She is a former Houlton resident who is now president and CEO of The Cedars, a non-profit senior living community in Portland.
